How to Make Cannabis CBD Tincture

Originally published on July 14, 2020. Last updated on March 5, 2021

Cannabis is now legal in some form or another in 29 states, with many other states likely to follow. If you are lucky enough to live in one of those states, or in a country where medical cannabis is legal, you can use it just like you would any other herb for its amazing medicinal benefits.

CBD rich varieties of cannabis are particularly nice because they deliver a powerful dose of medicine without as much of the high, which sometimes isn’t desired. Making a homemade cannabis CBD tincture is a great way to get those benefits in a concentrated and easy to administer way.

A dropper bottle of CBD tincture and a mason jar of cannabis infused oil.

Here is a video that explains more about CBD:

We live in Oregon, where recreational cannabis is legal, and we are allowed to grow up to four marijuana plants per household. We always make sure to grow at least one variety that is high in CBD for making cannabis infused oil, CBD salve, and this CBD tincture.

If you are interested in growing your own I recommend buying seeds from Seedsman. They have a large selection of high CBD varieties and ship to nearly everywhere.

Be sure to read my post on How to Make Cannabis CBD Infused Oil for more info on the legality of CBD in the United States.

This guide from NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) will tell you what the marijuana laws are in your state.

How to Use Cannabis CBD Tincture

CBD is best known for its pain relieving and inflammation reducing benefits, but it can also help with sleep issues, depression, anxiety, and nausea, to name a few.

Check out this list of CBD benefits to see what else it can help with.

To take the CBD tincture, start by putting a few drops under your tongue and seeing how you feel after an hour or two.

It can have different effects for different people, and the strain of cannabis you use can cause differences as well. Gradually up the dose until you feel some relief.

Where to Buy CBD Tincture

If you aren’t able to make your own tincture, I have found an amazing place to buy super high quality organic CBD products! I searched high and low for a cannabis company I could recommend, and Flower Child CBD is it.

FlowerChild has several CBD tinctures to choose from, each with different strengths and medicinal benefits. They also carry CBG tincture if you are interested in that. There is even one made just for pets!

They are an Colorado company, where recreational marijuana is legal, but they use pure CBD extract from organic hemp, so they are able to ship their products nationwide!

Cannabis CBD Tincture Recipe

Disclaimer: I only endorse you making cannabis CBD tincture at home if recreational or medical marijuana is legal in your state, and you have any required cards and/or licenses to do so!

To be honest, this is a really simple recipe. Just like making a regular herbal tincture, all you really need is plant material (a high CBD cannabis variety in this case, we like to use Harlequin or ACDC) and a high proof neutral spirit like vodka.

For an alcohol free tincture vegetable glycerine can be used instead of the spirits.

Before making this tincture, the first step is to decarboxylate the buds which will help to make the CBD more bioavailable. You can see my process for how to do that in my CBD infused oil post (don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than it sounds!).

Making a homemade tincture with cannabis buds

Once the buds have been decarboxylated, put them into jar. Don’t worry too much about amounts, just fill whatever size jar you want to use about ¾ full with buds.

I used a pint jar, but it all depends on how much cannabis you have access to and how much tincture you want to make.

Fill the jar with vodka, making sure to cover all of the buds. Cover the jar with a lid and put it in a cool and dark place to infuse for at least 6 weeks.

The tincture can be left to infuse for several months if you want, it won’t ever go bad and will continue to get stronger.

Finished cannabis CBD tincture

The homemade CBD tincture will be a green-brown color after infusing and will be very potent! Strain out the buds before using.

I find it convenient to store the finished tincture in dropper bottles, and it makes it easier for dosing as well.

Herbal medicine is great to have on hand, whether homemade or bought from a reputable place. I’m a firm believer in using cannabis as medicine and hope that everyone will soon have access to it!

What is CBD?

Here is a video that explains more about CBD:

Since cannabis became legal in Oregon last year, we were able to grow a few plants this past summer without any worry. We bought clones from the local cannabis pharmacy that were high in CBD, one of the major medicinal compounds in marijuana.

CBD is different from THC (another highly medicinal compound), in that it doesn’t get you “high,” so is therefore preferred by some people. After harvesting our plants, I made a CBD rich infused oil, which I have now turned into a cannabis CBD salve.

Be sure to read my post on How to Make Cannabis CBD Infused Oil for more info on the legality of CBD in the United States.

Homemade CBD Salve Recipe

Disclaimer: I only endorse you making infused CBD oil and salve at home if recreational or medical marijuana is legal in your state, and you have any required cards and/or licenses to do so!

Before you start this recipe you will first need to make CBD infused oil.

This is basically a version of my herbal salve recipe, but using CBD infused oil as the herbal oil. When you make your infused CBD oil, use any carrier oils that you like. I generally like to do a blend of coconut, sweet almond, and olive oils.

a jar of homemade cbd oil

How to Make CBD Salve

This recipe will make approximately ten ounces of salve in total. I used five 2 oz tins to store the salves in.

Make a double boiler by putting a smaller pot or bowl over a larger pot that has a couple inches of water in it. You can also use a glass pyrex measuring cup instead of the smaller pot.

Put the CBD infused oil into the smaller pot or pyrex and bring the water to a gentle simmer.

Add the beeswax to the oil and stir often. A wooden skewer works well as a stir stick.

When the beeswax is almost completely dissolved, add the shea butter. Stir until it is completely dissolved. Carefully pour the hot salve into your desired containers or tins.

CBD salve poured into tins

Let them sit undisturbed until they completely solidify, it usually takes an hour or two.

This salve smells amazing, like fresh cannabis. I guess maybe some people don’t appreciate that scent, but to me it is a beautiful plant with a lovely, herbaceous smell.

The main uses for this topical CBD salve are for reducing pain, inflammation, and for various skin issues. Here is a list of benefits and conditions that CBD may be therapeutic for.

If you’d prefer, I also have a homemade cannabis CBD tincture recipe here.

Plant medicine can be a powerful thing, and I think it’s so great that cannabis is finally starting to be recognized as a valuable medicinal in this country.

I sure hope that we continue on this trend of making this plant fully legal and available to everyone who needs it! It really is natural medicine at its finest.

What is CBD?

Here is a video that explains more about CBD:

Grow Your Own High CBD Cannabis

Recreational marijuana became legal in the state of Oregon in 2015, and I fully supported this law. Cannabis is a plant that was created by nature, god, mother earth, or whatever your belief system may be.

This past summer, we grew the four plants that we were legally allowed in containers in our backyard, next to our tomatoes and squash. We harvested it in the fall along with our other vegetable and herb crops.

We grew varieties that are high in a compound called CBD, which stands for cannabidiol. CBD does not get you high like THC does (another main component of cannabis), and is highly medicinal and pain relieving.

I decided to make some CBD infused oil for topical use using the Harlequin variety that we grew, which is extremely rich in CBD.

Learn more about how to grow your own organic cannabis here.

Harlequin High CBD Cannabis Variety

High CBD Cannabis Varieties

You will want to use a high CBD cannabis strain to make this infused oil. Some popular CBD strains are Harlequin, ACDC, Remedy, and Charlotte’s Web, but there are many others to choose from. Check with your local cannabis pharmacy to see what they have in stock.

If you are interested in growing your own I recommend buying seeds from Seedsman. They have a large selection of high CBD varieties and ship to nearly everywhere.

Legality of CBD in the United States

If you are unsure what the marijuana laws are in your state, here is a handy guide from NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws).

There is a bit of controversy and misunderstandings surrounding the laws about CBD itself. There are many claims that pure CBD extract is legal in “all 50 states,” but that is actually not entirely true.

The wonderful folks over at Project CBD (such a great resource!) have spelled this out in clear detail when I questioned them about it:

“In the United States, CBD is classified as a Schedule 1 Drug, whether derived from industrial hemp or cannabis. CBD is not yet legal federally and it’s not legal in all 50 states, as is often claimed. The FDA has not approved CBD as a dietary or health supplement. All cannabinoids, whether psychoactive or not, are scheduled. All researchers attempting to study it must get a license from the Federal Government in order to do research. If it was legal, then there wouldn’t be so much difficulty getting more studies conducted on this compound. Selling CBD products in non-medical states seems to be a grey area in the law, but FDA recently busted people selling CBD in Massachusetts and Wisconsin. It isn’t out of the question to have legal action brought towards those selling CBD if they aren’t in a state recognized cannabis law.”

They also have a great page titled Sourcing CBD: Marijuana, Industrial Hemp, & the Vagaries of Federal Law that is an excellent read for more information on this.

Cannabis CBD Infused Oil Recipe

Disclaimer: I only endorse you making infused CBD oil at home if recreational or medical marijuana is legal in your state, and you have any required cards and/or licenses to do so!

Now let’s get to making this CBD infused oil! This recipe is intended for use as a topical pain relieving oil that can be used as is or turned into a salve. I will be making a salve from this oil, you can see my recipe for that here.

The first step once you have your dried buds from a high CBD strain is to decarboxylate them. This is actually an optional but recommended step, as it will make more of the CBD bioavailable to the body.

Luckily, it’s an easy process as well. Simply spread your buds out in a single layer on a sheet pan and bake at 230°F for 40 minutes.

high cbd cannabis buds spread out onto a sheet pan

As you may have noticed, we did not trim all of the inner leaves off of these buds, because they were covered with crystals that we didn’t want to go to waste!

Then put your decarbed cannabis buds into a jar and completely cover them with the carrier oil of your choice. I used a blend of approximately 25% unrefined coconut oil, 25% sweet almond oil, and 50% extra virgin olive oil.

pouring oil over cannabis buds in a jar

Cover the jar with a lid and let sit in a dark place for at least six weeks. You may want to gently heat your oil a few times while it’s infusing, especially if you did not decarb your buds first. I like to do this in my Excalibur dehydrator, as it has excellent temperature control.

I don’t like to heat my oils at too high of a temperature in order to preserve the quality of the oil and to keep it from going rancid. This is not as much of an issue if you are making edibles rather than topicals, as they are generally consumed within a much shorter amount of time.

When you are ready to use the CBD oil, strain out the buds with a fine mesh sieve. If you want to make a super strong CBD infused oil, place a second round of decarbed buds into the oil and repeat the process.

straining the buds out of cannabis infused oil

You will end up with a highly fragrant and beautiful CBD rich oil!

a jar of high cbd infused oil

There are many amazing uses for this oil, but the most popular use is probably for its pain relieving properties. Here is a list of all the medicinal benefits of CBD and its products, such as this oil.

6 Favorite Organic CBD Oil Brands

Originally published on February 19, 2019. Last updated on November 30, 2020

CBD oil is all the rage right now, and for good reason. There are so many amazing benefits that CBD has to offer! One question that I get asked all the time is which CBD brands do I recommend? That is a tough one to answer because there are so many to choose from! I decided to sit down and do the research for you on the best organic CBD oil brands that I can wholeheartedly recommend to my readers.

six different cbd oil products on a wooden table

What to Look for in a CBD Brand

Organic: It’s important to use CBD brands that use organic cannabis (or hemp). This ensures that the end product is free of pesticides, herbicides, and other unwanted chemicals. The ability for cannabis growers to obtain USDA organic certification for hemp has only been available since the Farm Bill passed in December of 2018. This means that while many CBD brands are using hemp that is grown using organic methods, they may not be certified with the USDA organic label as of yet. Hopefully that will be changing very soon!

Extraction Process: It’s also important to know how the CBD oil and other products are processed. Many CBD companies use questionable processes and solvents to extract the CBD. I like to stick with companies that use the safest and most minimal extraction processes possible that leave the majority of beneficial compounds in place.

Whole Plant/Full Spectrum: This means that the whole hemp plant and buds are used in the extraction process, leaving the full range of cannabinoids, turpenes, and flavaniods in place. Whole plant and full spectrum CBD products are much better than ones that use pure CBD isolate because all of the plant compounds are medicinal and work together with the CBD to bring the greatest benefit. Read more about the difference between full spectrum and CBD isolate here.

If you are interested in a particular CBD brand I would first contact them and ask if they use organic hemp, find out what their extraction processes are, and if their products are whole plant or full spectrum.

My Favorite CBD Brands

Luckily I’ve done some of the work for you and have found some CBD companies that I absolutely love!

These six brands all use organic hemp, have minimal extraction processes, and are whole plant or full spectrum.

I also tried to choose brands that have some different offerings beyond just CBD oil, such as creams, lotions, salves, capsules, soothers, and even chocolate!

FlowerChild CBD

I really love FlowerChild CBD‘s products, and the owners are super nice and upfront with their methods and processes. They started in Oregon but have since moved to Colorado, and they use organic hemp from both states in their products.

FlowerChild CBD uses a food grade alcohol extraction which leaves all of the beneficial compounds in place. This results in whole plant therapy products that are highly effective!

They also carry CBG oil, which is another compound in cannabis and hemp that is beginning to gain a lot of attention for its beneficial properties.

From FlowerChild CBD: “Our products are all whole plant therapy, everything is 3rd party tested for potency, pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents and terpenes. We have been creating our wonderful healing products since 2014 and we know CBD!”

Keen CBD

I love Keen CBD because they are local to me here in southern Oregon (it’s always good to go local when you can)! I know the owners personally and I know how much care they put into their products.

Keen CBD uses hemp grown from local farmers in the rogue valley that utilize organic, biodynamic, and permaculture practices. Their products are whole plant CO2 extracted, which leaves all of the beneficial compounds in place.

Beyond CBD oil selections, Keen CBD also has a Comfort Lotion that uses CBD combined with arnica, and hard candy CBD Soothers.

From Keen CBD: “We make the best quality products at the most affordable price possible. By working directly with small scale farmers we are able to get the highest quality hemp/CBD grown with love and care. We formulate our products to highlight the natural qualities of the hemp/CBD creating simple and effective products which are easy to use. Our products are hand crafted in small batches with published test results for every unit publicly posted. “

Sunsoil (formerly Green Mountain CBD)

Sunsoil CBD has very recently rebranded from Green Mountain CBD. They are based in Vermont and use very minimal processing on their products, which is part of why I love them!

Sunsoil is different in that they grow all of their own hemp and it is certified organic from the USDA. They propagate their own seeds (a hybrid variety of indica and sativa), and grow their hemp on their farm in Hardwick, Vermont.

They also developed a simple lipid extraction process using only organic coconut oil and coconut-derived MCT oil to extract from their hemp plants. Nothing is added or removed in their extraction process, so you get the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes that exist naturally in the plant.

Sunsoil carries CBD oils, capsules, and CBD in organic coconut oil.

From Sunsoil CBD: “We are a seed-to-shelf company with a mission to bring the most good to the most people, by offering a high quality CBD oil that is both affordable and accessible – as it should be! Simplicity is key.”

sunsoil cbd products

NuLeaf Naturals

NuLeaf Naturals is probably the largest of the companies that I am recommending. They are based in Colorado and they have a proprietary partnership with a farm in Colorado that grows their strain of organic hemp plants.

They use a CO2 extraction process which results in a full spectrum CBD product that leaves all of the beneficial compounds in place.

One thing that is unique about NuLeaf Naturals is that they only sell one product and that is pure CBD oil without anything else added! They have different strengths and sizes for whatever your needs may be.

From NuLeaf Naturals: “Our CBD is offered in its purest form so there are no additives of any kind including CBD isolate – just as mother earth created it. We also have a wonderful customer service team that is here to assist with any question or hiccup that may arise!”

nuleaf naturals cbd oil

Sagely Naturals

Sagely Naturals offers some really great products for pain and relaxation. They are based in southern California and they use organic hemp that is grown in Kentucky.

Sagely uses a proprietary 5-step distillation process generated from full spectrum whole plant hemp. The last step in this process removes the THC, yet keeps intact the vital vitamins, minerals, and other cannabinoids that make hemp unique and therapeutic. The third party lab results of their raw exact and finished goods are void of any solvents, pesticides, heavy metals or THC.

Sagely Naturals carries CBD creams, roll-ons, sprays, and capsules that geared towards either relief and recovery or tranquility. Their products include herbs like turmeric, lavender, holy basil, and essential oils along with the CBD. They smell amazing and have an aromatherapy effect as well!

From Sagely Naturals: “Along with approachable branding and familiar products you would already find in your medicine cabinet (i.e. cream and supplements), Sagely Naturals leverages the benefits of full spectrum, hemp-derived CBD and exclusively uses all natural ingredients (i.e. no parabens, artificial colors or dyes, synthetic fragrances, or PEGs).”

sagely naturals cbd products

Grön CBD

Grön CBD specializes in CBD chocolate, which is a delicious way to get your cannabinoids! They are based in Portland, Oregon and have recently opened a CBD cafe and tasting room.

Beginning on March 1st, 2019 they will be using 100% USDA organically grown hemp extract in all of their products, grown by East Fork Cultivars in southern Oregon. (Prior to that they used non hemp derived CBD extract from lichen and lemon peel).

Besides chocolate, Grön CBD also sells yummy syrups, sauces, and body care items such as balms and face masks.

From Grön CBD: “Our products define themselves by the quality of the local Oregon ingredients, decadence of the hand crafted chocolate, and the lusciousness of the application. Buying Grön products means you are putting your spending dollars into the hands of farmers and crafters and you can feel confident that the ingredients come from the best sources possible.”

Bonus: Where to get CBD seeds

If you are interested in growing your own high CBD cannabis plants, I recommend buying seeds from Seedsman. They have a large selection of high CBD varieties (as well as THC varieties) and ship to nearly everywhere.

12 Powerful CBD Benefits for Your Health

Originally published on November 29, 2018. Last updated on September 30, 2019

{This post is sponsored by FlowerChild CBD}

Medical cannabis and CBD is all the rage these days, especially since it is becoming legal in more states every year. One major reason for all the excitement is that CBD is highly effective at treating many common health issues and relieving pain. The benefits of CBD and cannabis are huge, and people are starting to catch on! Read on to learn about the 12 most powerful CBD benefits for your health.

12 Powerful CBD Benefits for Your Health

Pain Relief and Inflammation

Probably one of the most sought after reasons for using CBD is for its powerful pain relieving properties. CBD is highly effective at reducing pain levels, particularly chronic pain. It has been shown to be especially beneficial for fibromyalgia. Taking CBD products may decrease the need for pain medication and opiates.

CBD and other cannabinoids are highly beneficial for relieving inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are used by all parts of the body, making it very effective for most types of inflammatory diseases. It is especially helpful for arthritis, rheumatiod arthritis, and autoimmune disorders.

Due to its pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can help to clear a headache. It has also been shown to be very beneficial for migraines and may even work better than prescription medication with less side effects.

To use for pain or inflammation, CBD can be taken internally as a tincture (also called CBD oil). If you grow your own high CBD cannabis you can make a homemade CBD tincture, or you can purchase from a reputable source (I highly recommend FlowerChild CBD – scroll to the end of this post for a coupon code!).

CBD can also be applied topically for more localized pain. This can be done by using a topical CBD oil or salve. I have a recipe for homemade CBD oil that can then be used to make a pain relieving CBD salve. Or you can purchase a topical CBD salve from FlowerChild CBD.

Stress, Anxiety, and Depression

Another common use for CBD is for stress and anxiety. Cannabis that is high in CBD compounds has been consistently shown by numerous studies to reduce anxiety and stress. It can also be helpful for treating symptoms of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

CBD has also been shown to improve symptoms of depression.

Here is a video that explains more about CBD:

Skin Conditions

Topical CBD products are not only good for pain relief, they are also very beneficial for the skin. CBD helps to repair damage from free radicals and promotes healing of damaged skin. It can aid in the healing of wounds and is beneficial for treating acne and psoriasis.

Digestion

Due to its inflammation reducing properties, CBD is very effective at calming digestive issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s disease, Colitis, leaky gut, and nausea.

According to this study, cannabis has been used for centuries for gastrointestinal issues. Endocannabinoids are a vital part of the digestive system, and taking CBD products can help to effectively soothe an inflamed digestive tract.

Sleep Issues and Relaxation

While it has been shown that CBD is actually mildly stimulating versus sedating, it is still effective at regulating sleep. It can be helpful for treating insomnia, and may possibly benefit those with sleep apnea.

CBD is also highly beneficial for relaxing and helping to unwind after a long day.

Autism, ADD, and ADHD

There has been some new research that points to CBD as being an effective therapy for children on the autism spectrum. This includes improvement in problematic behaviors and communication, with a decrease in anxiety.

There’s also been a recent buzz about CBG (cannabigerol), the precursor to both CBD and THC, being very helpful for children with autism. Read more about what CBG is here. CBG is available for purchase from FlowerChild CBD.

Both full spectrum cannabis and CBD can be beneficial for treating ADD and ADHD, helping to calmly focus and clear the mind.

Epilepsy and Seizures

Possibly one of the most studied benefits of CBD with tremendous results is its use for controlling seizures from epilepsy and other disorders.

This was brought to attention when the parents of a young girl named Charlotte started giving her CBD oil to control her near constant seizures with great success. This was one of the events that brought CBD for medicinal use into popularity. The high CBD, low THC cannabis variety called Charlotte’s Web was created for and named after the little girl, and still remains a highly sought after strain.

medical cannabis cbd buds in a prescription bottle

Glaucoma

CBD and cannabis have been shown to be beneficial for glaucoma by decreasing eye pressure. While smoking cannabis relieves the pressure for only a few hours, taking CBD internally may be a better solution. It will be interesting to see what new studies emerge on using CBD to treat the symptoms of glaucoma.

Diabetes and High Blood Sugar

The fact that CBD can be used to help control diabetes by stabilizing blood sugar is exciting for me in particular. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant, which means that I have a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

CBD has also been shown to help with all of the complications that come along with diabetes.

Cardiovascular Health and Cholesterol

Amazingly, CBD is also great for cardiovascular health and reducing cholesterol. It lowers blood pressure and is anti-inflammatory, which is beneficial for the heart and arteries.

It has also been shown that those who use CBD regularly have lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol numbers and higher HDL (“good”) cholesterol numbers.

Brain Health and Alzheimer’s

One of the most promising uses for CBD specifically is for regulating brain health. Cannabinoids are neuroprotective and they encourage the creation of new nerve cells, even as we get older and our brains start to age.

CBD also has great potential to be beneficial for treating the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This is huge for those who are suffering the devastating effects from these diseases.

Cancer and Cancer Treatment

CBD has the potential to be an anticancer drug, but more studies are needed. Preliminary studies have shown promising results of the effect of CBD in fighting cancer, specifically in reducing tumor growth.

There have been more studies done on using CBD for easing some of the effects of cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, and the results are very positive. It can drastically reduce nausea and vomiting, and is effective for pain control and anxiety.
